Well, if “The Google” showed me the same results here and also saying 1.7% is part of the LGBT community at large, but gallup did a poll in the early 2000s and it says that up to 22% of men/women surveyed were gay... which makes me believe one is outrageously overstated or another is very conservative with the data collection (maybe they went to a catholic school for the polling, I wouldn’t know)

But yeah, can confirm this guy is dumb. Like yes, I understand the concern about parents pushing their kids to not choose genders or whatever..... but that happens so uncommonly that it isn’t really an issue. It’s also California he’s running in.

0.3 is correct. There are as many transgender people as there are deaf people and our population actually exceeds that of some Native tribes.

Things are a little weird right now for sure. The whackos of both sides of the spectrum have always been here- the crazy conservatives are just more energized now because one ended up in the Oval Office. The truly batshit candidates can be explained by the lax rules for being on a ballot- in my area, you need something like 250 signatures on a petition to be on ballot for the state legislature.

Here’s a thought. The election of trump was a reaction against social, political, economic trends in this country that left a large enough segment of the population feeling disaffected, disenfranchised, and ignored. The lesson to be learned is that we ignore the concerns of groups whose views we don’t share at our society’s peril.

In this case, the major concerns that tipped the balance were and are economic. Even though internet discussion focuses on the social issues, they are not center stage here. Enough people felt that their government was not putting their needs first in the light of the internationalist, free trade direction we’ve taken the last couple decades, and they got desperate. They elected someone who they believed would pay more than lip service to their woes. We are now paying the price with the threat of looming tariffs and trade wars.

My philosophical statement, and my wish, would be that if a preponderance of the electorate — okay, electoral college — wanted a conservative, why couldn’t we have had a Trey Gowdy or a Jeff Flake? Reliable conservatives who are also people of integrity? Not deplorable enough, I guess. I hope the Democrats get it.

I think that is an overly broad statement. VP Pence won’t be making any porn stars household names or brag about grabbing anyone’s genitals or overtly subvert the American justice system, though he might do so covertly , as it seems most presidents do... And that’s just the most spectacular thing I can think of. Pence may be a creepy old White evangelical, but 45 is in a category unto himself.

And many people still think that way, but that’s hopelessly outdated thinking that focuses on the superficialities of skin color. To illustrate what I mean by that, let’s change that statement a little bit:

A Black man on the Supreme Court for 27 years sounds pretty progressive to me .

How many people who call themselves progressive would nod their heads in agreement at that sentence?

Black vs. white, republican vs. democrat, conservative vs. liberal...those are really just proxies for the eternal us vs. them mind set that comes naturally to humans. “Us” is the people who are in my shoes or at least care about me, and “them” is the people who are outsiders and don’t understand or care about my concerns.

Nobody seems to have learned anything from Trump’s ascendance. Go on to the FP, any of the other Kinja blogs, or out into the internet in general, and what you see is the people who didn’t want Trump excoriating, demeaning, and dismissing the people who voted for and support him. They are only further solidifying their position at the “them”. They are not helping to solve the problem, of which Trump is only the tip of the iceberg.

My single sentence boils out a lot of context. My brother-in-law is about as progressive as they come and he sees BHO as a mostly authentic human being, which, in the case of Clarence Thomas, we’d have to wonder about.

Some of the “them” who voted for Trump are my family in rural Pennsylvania. An Oppo, soon after Trump’s election, put it more succinctly than anyone I’ve heard: “They figured they were going to lose either way, so they rolled the dice on Trump.”

Reading your comment, I’d have to conclude that you and I see the situation quite similarly, but that may have been clear to us both already. I claim to be able to straddle the trench of division more effectively than many, and I am always happy to have an inherent bias pointed out, though I reserve the right to claim a bias as a view after some consideration.
